| Before this man made entrance was cut the natural entrance
to the lakes would be blocked by sand in times of low flow, a later strong
flow would cause the lake to create a new entrance further along the
coast. When the river trade developed a safe, navigable entrance was
required. |

The accommodation at Goldsmith's in the forest is
near the top of the North arm of the lake, where the granite was loaded onto the
barges to complete its journey to the newly dug entrance.
