Bairnsdale to Lakes Entrance 65 Km a full day ride Bruthen to Lakes 36 km four hours one way The Gippsland Lakes Discovery Trail follows the route of an old tramway constructed in the early 1900's to move granite from a quarry in the forest to Lakes Entrance. The granite was used to reinforce the timber used to build the permanent entrance which was being eaten away by marine worms. The track was designed so that the steam engine was only required to pull the empty trucks back up to the quarry; so the ride down the old tramway is a gentle, contour following, descent.
