On the way down the gully to check Maximum and Minimum
temperatures in preparation for revegetation I stepped up onto a log and saw
this lyrebird feeding.
As I stood and watched it continued to feed scraping through the light soil
with its huge feet. The photograph was taken in the evening, about 5 PM in
late may so the light was failing.
The bird is a female or young male, lacking the distinctive lyre shape
feathers of the mature male.
At this time of year the Lyre Birds are calling at dusk and dawn. |

Late August and the nest of twisted sticks is in
use. Flat on the ground, although set well up on the steep side of the
gully, it seems a prime target for fox predation.
